Ditch the bottled BBQ sauce - the first ingredient in most of them is high fructose corn syrup. While eating a small amount of the store bought stuff isn't all THAT bad for you, it's not all that good for you either, and most of us don't stop at the recommended one tablespoon serving size. Eliminate the extra sugar and calories by making your own sauce at home. My homemade BBQ sauce is sweet, tangy, spicy, and smoky, and it's super easy & quick to make. Makes 1 cup of sauce. Ingredients: 1 8 oz. can no-salt-added tomato sauce ¼ cup apple cider vinegar ¼ cup water ½ tsp. black pepper ½ tsp. onion powder ¼ tsp. paprika 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp. brown sugar ½ Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce ½ Tbsp. lemon juice A few dashes of liquid smoke ¼ tsp. of cayenne pepper, or a few dashes of hot sauce Directions: Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn the heat to low and place the lid on loosely, letting some of the steam evaporate. Simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally, scraping the bottom and sides of the pan with a rubber spatula. When the sauce is ready, it will have thickened, and will coat the back of a spoon. Serving suggestions: Use this sauce to make BBQ meatballs; use as a dipping sauce for chicken fingers; spoon a small amount on sliced zucchini, peppers, and red onion, and grill in a foil packet or bake in the oven for a tasty side.
